It’s official - Virgin Media is Ireland’s fastest broadband network

Ookla validates Virgin Media claims after 1 million speed tests by Irish consumers

Thursday 27th January, 2016 - Virgin Media has been named Ireland’s fastest broadband network by the independent measurement institute Ookla, following their analysis of over 1 million speed tests by Irish Internet users over six months across the main 4 broadband operators in Ireland.

Ookla Speedtest is the global standard in Internet connection testing and is carried out directly and independently by consumers themselves.  The analysis took place from July – December 2015 and can be viewed on http://www.speedtest.net/awards/ie/isp

The results show undisputedly that Virgin Media is providing its customers with the highest broadband speeds in Ireland.   During the six month analysis period, Virgin Media delivered broadband speeds of 123.65 Mbps to customers across its fibre power network in Ireland, almost double the speed of its nearest competitor.

In a further major speed uplift, Virgin Media recently introduced a new top line speed 360 Mbps broadband service to three quarter of a million homes.

Bill Blake, Virgin Media’s Head of Commercial and Products said:

“These findings clearly demonstrate that Virgin Media offers the fastest broadband in Ireland.  This is a fact established by Ookla, the global standard in internet speed testing and none of our competitors come close to our speeds.”

“Broadband device usage is doubling every three years in Ireland and the actual broadband speeds delivered by providers is becoming increasingly important.   Speeds are influenced by a range of factors including the type of subscription, WiFi and the equipment being used such as PCs, laptops, tablets, mobiles, the network and cables into the house.”

Bill Blake added: “The importance of quality high speed broadband in the home is immeasurable.  The average Virgin Media home consumes over 100GB of data per month, an increase of over 300% in the last 3 years.  The average home now has 7.4 connected devices* across laptops, tablets, smartphones and Smart TV’s.

“We’re maximising the power of our network to meet the changing needs of our customers who are among the highest users of Internet and download capacity in Ireland.  The Ookla findings underline our track record of sustained broadband innovation.”

The Ookla Speedtest is designed to show which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are fastest by showing the top performing speeds achieved by each ISP.  There are over 50 million Ookla Speedtests carried out across over 40,000 ISPs worldwide each month.  Ookla calculates its findings from the highest performing top 10% of all speed test results.
