The title was never decided in September; that much, we’ll concede. But with the Premier League in full swing, it’s already time to start paying attention – you’d never know what you might miss!

PUKKI MONSTER

 

Having bagged 29 goals in helping Norwich back into the top flight, Teemo Pukki could hardly have been described as an unknown quantity. If any top-flight fans had slept on the Finn, though, it didn’t take long for his mark to be made; scoring in four of the first five games of the season – including a hat-trick against Newcastle – has made him a marked man…although his record suggests defenders need to mark him even more!

 

 

ADIOS JAVI GARCIA

 

A mere four games into the season – and not even four months since leading Watford to the FA Cup Final – Javi Garcia was given his marching orders at Vicarage Road. Adding to the drama was the fact that his replacement, Quique Sánchez Flores, was previously the Hornets’ boss a few years ago, before being unceremoniously let go himself! Job security isn’t something the Premier League has ever been known for, but this is a new one…

 

 

VAR FOR THE MADDING CROWD

 

Watching football on the telly is just about the most popular pastime on the planet. Pop a few refs in front of the screen, though – with an all-important link to the match official, of course – and things get a little different! The introduction of replay technology has already led to a number of dramatic turns, contentious decisions, and all matter of worried hand-wringing; don’t expect it to stop anytime soon, either!

Having jettisoned Rafael Benitez, Newcastle look aside in trouble, while with Brendan Rodgers at the helm Leicester are back mixing it with the big boys. Ole Gunnar Solkjaer has found the honeymoon period at Old Trafford a little shorter than anticipated, and Liverpool’s start to the season has been utterly electric. So yeah, there’s lots going on – the time for standing on the sidelines is over!
